The first three seasons of the series aired in 2017, 2022, and 2024. The anime adapts Shougo Kinugasa’s popular psychological school-life light novel series, which has surpassed 10.8 million copies in print. The original (Year 1) novels ran from 2015 to 2019, followed by the Year 2 sequel from 2020 to 2024. The Year 3 arc began in March 2025 and is ongoing.

The franchise also has multiple manga adaptations. Yuyu Ichino adapted the original novel series, while Xia Sasane covered the Year 2 storyline through 2024. A new Year 2 manga by Hachi Komada began in early 2025. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the novels and manga in English, including the Horikita spin-off.
