ive watched a lot that are staples for the genre (a lot of satoshi kun's work, serial experiments lain, steinsgate, etc.) is there anything else you guys would recommend?

Not sure if you already watched Psychopass. I really loved the way that anime was written. It made me ponder on the way human beings think. Love that anime so much.

I've always loved Paranoia Agent if you haven't seen that one before. If you want more horror-y then Another is fun. Terror in Resonance and Kokkoku are a bit slow but a decent watch. If you don't mind CG then Inuyashiki or Dorohedoro. Made in Abyss is also fantasitic if you haven't seen that one yet, it may appear cute but it can mess you up :)
I also second that Psychopass is fantastic.
